Knoxville Dollars for Scholars Receives New Named Scholarship The Knoxville Dollars for Scholars chapter received a new “named scholarship” in honor of longtime Knoxville resident, Leonard “Bid” Long. With a named scholarship you can award an annual scholarship in the name of your family, a graduate, a class, or a company. Another benefit to a contributor in selecting the named scholarship is the ability to provide direction in how those dollars are awarded. Bid was born April 28, 1914 in Everist, Iowa. He went on to graduate from Attica High School where he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. He married Wilda Mallory in Attica where they lived for several years before moving to Knoxville in 1942. They had three children, Doris L. Maltby, and Jim and Steve Long of Knoxville. Bid worked at the Marion County Courthouse where he eventually became deputy clerk of court. In 1946, he began working at the Iowa State Savings Bank and retired there as head cashier in 1979. He enjoyed meeting customers every day. He played fast pitch softball for many summers and was an avid golfer. He also loved to fish and hunt. Bid served as secretary-treasurer of the Marion County Red Cross during WWII and several years after where he helped many people in need. He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church, and was a good neighbor and friend to many in Knoxville and the surrounding area.
